Is rubberwood a sustainable material?

Rubberwood can be a sustainable choice. Harith Ridzuan believes it is a good option for Malaysians looking for sustainable wood, because it is strong, sturdy and durable. It comes from rubber trees grown for latex, so the timber is a by-product. That alone does not make it certified, and buyers should still check.

Where rubberwood comes from

Rubberwood comes from rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis), mainly grown on plantations for latex. After about 25 to 30 years, latex yields fall and further harvesting is no longer worth it. The trees are then felled and replaced with new ones, and the timber can be made into furniture and other wood products instead of being discarded or burned.

The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) confirms that rubberwood is sourced from rubber plantations with systematic replanting, and that trees are generally felled after a 25-year rotation when latex production becomes uneconomical. Read the MTCC clarification on rubberwood.

Harith lists plantation wood as one of three sustainable wood categories, with rubberwood as the popular Malaysian example. With proper management and harvesting, plantation wood can be a steady source in the future. Read his article on sustainable wood sourcing.

Plantation origin is not the same as certification

Being a by-product of latex production does not automatically mean rubberwood is certified. MTCC treats plantation origin and PEFC Chain of Custody certification as different things. If you want proof, ask for certification. See PEFC certification explained.

What to check before you buy rubberwood furniture

  • Certification. Ask if the supplier holds PEFC/MTCS Chain of Custody certification.
  • Treatment and drying. Look for dry, well-treated wood.
  • Finish. Choose a good finish, ideally water-based or natural oil. See what makes furniture green.
  • Build quality. Solid joints and a repairable design make any wood last longer.

Is rubberwood good for furniture?

It is widely used for indoor furniture. Look for dry, well-treated wood and a good finish.

Choosing between rubberwood and teak furniture

When you compare rubberwood furniture with teak furniture, do not rely on the name of the wood alone. Ask the supplier about the source of the material, whether it suits your space, drying, finish and the quality of the joints. Check certification evidence too, if that is part of your requirements.

Reclaimed wood is another option to consider when the condition and history of the material are suitable. This guide stays focused on rubberwood and how to judge its source. A detailed comparison between types of wood needs a guide of its own.

Rubberwood and reclaimed wood

Both give timber a second life. Reclaimed wood is recovered from earlier uses such as pallets and old furniture. Rubberwood is harvested from plantation trees at the end of their latex life. See Is reclaimed wood strong?.
